Chicago is freakin massive, so I'm trying to find a safe, clean, reasonably cheap happy medium for a hotel.
I'm looking for something close to the Riviera Theatre, but not too far from other places we will visit because I'm guessing that traffic will be hell. I'd prefer a hotel that has safe parking--hopefully free parking on premesis.

Here are a few examples of other places we'll visit:
Lincoln Park Zoo
Bachelors Grove Cemetery
Navy Pier
Twisted Spoke
Cheesecake Factory
The Alley
Greektown
Chinatown

Neighborhood Inns of Chicago probably has the nicest hotels close to the Riv. One of them, the City Suites, is basically across the street from the Alley (and a block from the train line, so super convenient for transit). I don't know about parking arrangements there, though. http://www.cityinns.com/

There's also a Best Western (Hawthorne Terrace) in Lakeview, which is a great neighborhood just south of Uptown (where the Riv is at). They have parking on site, but I don't think it's free, even for guests. http://www.hawthorneterrace.com/

The Days Inn on Diversey, where a lot of smaller bands stay when they're in town, is also an option. They have valet parking, but, again, there's a daily charge, even for guests (though you do get unlimited in & out privileges). http://www.lpndaysinn.com/location.html

You're definitely better off parking the car and taking mass transit around the city. Most of the places you're planning to go don't have free parking anywhere nearby.

The Rivera isnt a theater anymore it's a nightclub and unfortunately you do have to pay for parking for:

Cheesecake Factory
Navy Pier
Lincoln Park Zoo
Greektown(there's parking on the side streets there's no meters)
Chinatown(park on side streets, but look out for permit parking signs)

Your best bet is to take the "L" to where you want to go unless you can drive and park on a side street(again be aware some side streets are permit parking and you will get ticketed and towed)
