I am thinking about purchasing a new laptop, but I'd like to wait until Vista is available; anyone know when this will be?

They are still saying January. Given the past track record that probably means April or so.

Beware, Vista is a massive resource hog and is still not fully compatible with all hardware and software. It is very attractive, but so far that's the only benefit I see. On average it uses 600MB of RAM when idling. At best it gets as low as 520MB. That means you need at least 1GB (1024MB) to run Vista effectively without constant slowdowns. It is also very taxing on your graphics card so make sure you have a nice ATI or NVidia card in your system. The base install requires 15GB of free hard drive space as well.
It scares me how many people are eager to run out the door and spend hundreds of dollars on a new operating system without knowing anything about it. The current RC2 is available if you'd like to try it out. Oops, I forgot, they pulled RC2 the day after I downloaded it. They're back to RC1.

Jan. 30 is most likely the official date, but it may come out late (knowing microsoft). After October 28, 2006, Microsoft is offering free or discounted upgrades once it comes out! You may want to start looking for a loptop with that discount.

frist 2 weeks in jan 207 it will be available to the public.,be at the store at 5 am there is going to be millions from yahoo Answer's in 1 big rush to buy it , you get in frist ,lol
