In my experience, once I lost respect for someone, I find it hard to respect that person ever again.

Respect and trust go together. You respect a person because you trust him/her and vice versa. Once you have lost the respect and trust for someone it'll be extremely difficult to regain it. But people do change. If that someone can be truly sincere again, you can trust and respect him/her again.

Wow, if i could rate this I would vote it best question. That's a tough one because I really think it goes to forgiving and not forgetting. Sometimes you can trust a person again because you forgive them, but with respect i think that you never truly forget an incident that would cause you to no longer respect someone and that it would take a lot to get that back.

I think once the other party is aware of your feelings, and loves you that he will do what's necessary to regain the trust. But it shouldn't be all him, it should be both of you working together to rekindle what you know lies beneath the contempt
