What are mitochondria?

Mitochondria are the cell's power producers. They convert energy into forms that are usable by the cell. They are the sites of cellular respiration which ultimately generates fuel for the cell's activities

What are their distinguishing characteristics?

Mitochondria are bounded by a double membrane. Each of these membranes is a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins. The outermost membrane is smooth while the inner membrane has many folds. These folds are called cristae. The folds enhance the "productivity" of cellular respiration by increasing the available surface area.

Mitochondria are the site of cellular respiration.

"A dominant role for the mitochondria is the production of ATP as reflected by the large number of proteins in the inner membrane for this task. This is done by oxidizing the major products of glycolysis: pyruvate and NADH that are produced in the cytosol. This process of cellular respiration, also known as aerobic respiration, is dependent on the presence of oxygen. When oxygen is limited the glycolytic products will be metabolised by anaerobic respiration a process that is independent of the mitochondria. The production of ATP from glucose has an approximately 15 fold higher yield during aerobic respiration compared to anaerobic respiration."

Mitochondria are organelles that can be found in the cells of living organisms. Their main purpose is to produce energy for the cell. They are a part of the cellular respiration system. They are found in all types of cells in our body, though some cells tend to have more mitochondria than others because of their different energy requirements, such as cells in the tips of our fingers.
