I saw several of the original moon launches Apollo 8 near Christmas of 1968, and then the night launch in 1972. Now that was spectacular. Both times I was standing on the shore of the Banana River that separates the Cape form Titusville. I was told that the Launch pad was seven miles from our location. The shock wave of the blastoff was visible on the water as it raced across the bay. Then came the horrendous thunder. I am not sure that area can even be used to view the launches free anymore. I did see a shuttle launch a few years ago, just before the terrible Columbia tragedy. I took my grandkids to see it and paid for the bus to take us legitamately from the Cape Visitor's Center to the viewing area for launches. It was about $15 each that night. Cancelations of the shot are not refunded if the bus takes you out there. The launch seemed even further away then it seemed for the Moon shots, and without binoculars it was a small view. It was cold as heck that night and just around sundown. It was interesting, but not what I had remembered about the moon shots. The website for launch tickets is:

They will go on sale for the December launch on October 13th

We saw a shuttle launch just by parking along side the road. That's what everyone did--pulled over to the side and just watched, for free!
