Thanksgiving Day is a rather large annual gathering at my parents' house each year. My mother's family, and my dad's brother are usually there with lots of kids. Dad is rather well-known for cooking catfish, and hushpuppies. Many family members request this at various gatherings. Several years ago, someone mentioned that they wanted to have fried fish for Thanksgiving. Like a dare, and to be funny, we had a typical catfish dinner with all the trimmings on Thanksgiving Day. No turkey, no ham, no giblet gravy, and no cranberry sauce, etc.

While this is not done each year, there have been repeat performances on Thanksgiving. No one seems to miss the more traditional fare and family still travels 100's of miles to meet at my parents house each year for Thanksgiving.

Actually, we have little information about what the Pilgrim's ate on that first Thanksgiving (Harvest Home.) But, since it occurred near the Massachusetts coast line, it seems reasonable to suspect that seafood was on the menu.

My maternal grandparents homesteaded in St. Francis, KS and, family oral history states that native Indians in that area taught my grandmother how to make dried corn, which she then soaked in water overnight (just as one would do with beans), and then would boil the corn for about four hours in lightly salted water. Then, just an hour before it was to be served, she would add a pint or so of heavy cream and would let that simmer. The taste (which is acquired, of course) is wonderful. It is even better when the dish is allowed to rest in the refrigerator overnight...my children and I make this tasty side dish for all our holiday meals. You can slowly dry frozen corn kernels and store them in a glass container that is sealed carefully (with a metal lid, for example). Try it - you'll like it!

We always have two meats. 1st one is a goose and 2nd is a deer roast with lots of gravy and my mom's homemade bread. For desert grilled pineapple and Mississippi mud cake. There are all of the other trimmings in between but these are the different ones.
Does your family have something different?

This has become a regular at holiday meals. I make Polish Potato Salad. it is made with sour cream, green olives, green onions, and bacon. I haven't seen many others use this,(not saying nobody does) but I wouldn't have a holiday without it. :)

a deep fried turkey and an oven baked one.Wish you guys could come over !
We also invite a less fortunate family over for dinner.
Several of us also volunteer at a community turkey feast earlier in the day.

we have everything on the daily bases: noodles, carrots, broccoli. the only thing different is turkey. once, we even had a pizza!
