Looking for the total number of pitches in an MLB single inning, both top and bottom (home and away pitching). I've seen many theoretical numbers (zero), but want an actual number from an actual game.

Ok, needs to be a 6 out inning. This discounts GWR by the home team in the bottom of the 9th.

Those who have answered with only a number, supply sources. Game, date, pitchers, etc.

I'm just going to give you a theoretical number now, unless I can find any other evidence, but it is entirely possible that there have been as few as 4 pitches in an inning.

If it is the 9th inning or later, and the score is tied, the away team can get 3 outs on 3 pitches. An when the home team comes to bat, a homerun on the 1st pitch ends the inning (and the game) and results in a 4-pitch inning.

I'm gonna leave the above explanation to show how naive I am. Yes, you can have a 0 pitch inning. But as for what is the actual record for fewest pitches in an inning? I don't know.

The fewest number of pitches that can be thrown in an inning is six: three in the bottom half and three in the top half.

The fewest number that can be thrown in a nine-inning game is 54.

ONE. Rule 8.02 or 8.04 can get a batter on base, then a one pitch into a triple play, probably use up a lot of pitchers being changed but its legit.

Theoretically you could have a minimum of 3 (assuming you hit the batter 3 times get walks, and then throw them out trying to steal. Dont think its ever happened though...
