Daguerre did positive image making--chemicals and light reacting on a silver plate the resulting pix were daguerrotypes. sorry i don't know the answer to who made negatives, but i am positive that a daguerrotype is just the opposite...peachie is correct it is , without a doubt William Talbot

"Talbot" had invented the calotype process. He coated paper sheets with silver chloride to create an intermediate negative image.

Some French guy named Deguerre, at least I think that's how it's spelled. The first camera was the Daguerreotype.

supposedly Niepce, before him in history is Daguerre.
