I have found Yahoo mail to have one of the best spam traps going - and I'm pretty sure the spammers think that too, what I think is happening is the spammers are just trying to find ways of beating the spam filter.
Just try switching off the spam filter in your prefs and see how much spam you get without it.
I think Yahoo have got something right with their spam filtering.
I started my yahoo account as a throw away email address but found the filtering so good I use it more than my ISP's email address

By constantly changing the Sender and Subject lines of emails, spammers hope to fool email filtering. You may have noticed the atrocious spelling of the subject lines. If a filter is set to filter out the word "Viagra", the word "Vearag", etc, will probably get through to your Inbox. Any strange or unexpected emails should be deleted unopened, they could contain a virus.

this is direct mail and there is not any basic way around it. i assume which you have anti-virus application on your laptop so one way of considerably reducing the quantity of direct mail may be to close the majority mail container on your digital mail account.
