The easiest way to decide if a number is odd or even is the following: If the number is a divisible of 2 ( in other words you can take the number and divide it by 2 and come up with a number evenly, that is like 86 divided by 2 = 43 with no remainder the number is an even one). The number you mentioned is 87. If you divide it by 2 you get 43 with a remainder of one. That means that it is an odd one. This will work every time.

When an integer ends with: 1,3, 5, 7 and 9, it may be considered to be an odd number.

Also, two odd numbers added together give an even number. Example, 87 + 87 = 174.

an even # is 1 where you can divide it by 2 & the answer will be an integer (whole number). an odd number is an integer where if you divide by 2 you don't get an integer.
87/2=43 1/2 which is not an integer therefore 87 is odd.

Odd numbers are not equally divisible by 2. If explaining to a child, you look at the last digit of the number, and if it is a 0,2,4,6,or 8 then the entire number is even. If not, it is odd. Can you count out the last digit with the same number of fingers on both hands? If not, it is odd.

The last number is a 7.

Any number ending in a 1,3,5,7 or 9 is odd. If the number is a decimal, then determine if it is odd by looking at the number to the left of the decimal point.
