Caffeine, in moderation, is fine for most women while breastfeeding. Caffeine is approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics for use in breastfeeding mothers. You'll want to limit yourself to no more than the equivalent of 5 five-ounce cups of coffee per day. This link has a chart that will help you figure out how much caffeine is in different foods/drinks.

Most breastfeeding mothers can drink caffeine in moderation. Some babies, particularly those under 6 months, may be more sensitive to mom's caffeine intake. Babies whose mothers avoided caffeine completely during pregnancy seem to react more to caffeine in mom's diet. Even if baby is sensitive to the caffeine now, he may not be when he's a little older, so if you do have to stop or limit your caffeine intake, you can try again when baby is older.
Caffeine is approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics for use in breastfeeding mothers. Per Medications and Mother's Milk caffeine is in Lactation Risk Category L2, milk levels are quite low and usually peak 1 hour after ingestion. One study has indicated that chronic coffee drinking might decrease iron content of breastmilk
If your baby is sensitive to caffeine, it will typically become less of an issue as baby gets older. Newborns have a much harder time metabolizing caffeine than older infants. Preterm or ill infants might also have more problems with mom's caffeine intake.

Everything is fine in moderation. Try and limit your caffeine intake to 1-2 caffeinated beverages per day. If you think the it might be bothering the baby (making him/her cranky or wired) than don't drink caffeine within 2 hours of breastfeeding.

I agree with everything cr3ater said.
Some people get obsessed with stuff - especially pregnant women which carries on to moms - I know for me I wouldn't touch tuna - even if I was allowed to eat a little bit of it - I wouldn't touch it just in case. A lot of people harassed me cause I would drink an occasional soda and they would lecture me on the caffeine or nutra sweet - but basically if its moderation you are fine. Same after the baby is here - if you drink like 4-5 cups a day you should probably cut back but if you need that morning coffee to wake you up a bit then go for it.

The studies show pros and cons for caffeine. Nursing mothers should not drink caffeinated coffee or other fluids because the caffein comes out in breast-milk to the baby and baby does not need it at all.

Caffeine tends to be dehydrating so yes, it is bad for breastfeeding moms. You want to keep your fluid intake up so that your body can produce the milk the baby needs. Skip caffeinated drinks and keep soda (even decaf) to a minimum. Nothing is better for a breastfeeding mother than water, 8 glasses a day.

I am with the one answer below, they really do not know what actually gets to the baby. Some thinks it does some say its too minimal to affect the baby. They say this with alot of things, but I noticed my daughter did not want to breastfeed if I had too much fresh garlic that day. So you just never know, I chose to not have any caffeine just in case.
Good Luck :-)

My doctor said as long as your caffeine intake isn't harmful to you it isn't harmful to baby. Excessive caffeine will be harmful. She also said while caffeine in moderating isn't harmful, any amount of chocolate is.

Anything you eat/drink ends up in the breastmilk so I would say limit your caffeine intake to maybe one cola or cup of coffee a day. You don't want it to effect your baby.
