It's really not a sport, because you're not doing anything that resembles team or individual accomplishments through exercise and activity. But Fantasy sports are leagues in which a group of individuals pick athletes and then win or lose based on that athletes performance. For example if I were to pick Allen Iverson, Kevin Garnett and others, their total statistics would determine whether I win or lose for that week. So if they had 90 points, 50 rebounds and 22 assists, and the team I played had 68 points, 44 rebounds, and 19 assists, I would chalk up a win. It goes through the course of a season and most leagues have a championship to determine the winner. Some fantasy sports are different. My friend plays Fantasy Nascar and has to pick the top 5 racer's for that race. If you pick first correctly you get 15 points. 12 points for getting second place, 9 for third, etc. Whoever has the most points at the end of the season wins that fantasy league... The long and short of it is a way to interract with your friends and colleagues through sports, and gain a competitive edge through thought processing and predictions.

that first response is a good one- note that fnatasy football is the most popular fantasy sports game and it works in the same ways.

For many people, the joy of fantasy football comes from the draft. In our league we have all of the managers (10-12 friends depending on the year) come over, hold a draft similar to a pro football draft, and drink a good deal of beer. You draw for draft position, then every manager gets 90 seconds per pick, all the way through 15 rounds. Each week you must activate your roster, which typically is made up of a quarterback, two running backs, 2-3 receivers, a tight end, a kicker, and a defense, and sometimes a flex spot.

Many people also play for money - in our 12 person league we pay 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

In my experience fantasy sports are a great way to play a social yet competitve strategy game. It's poker with touchdowns.

You pick players, and the better stats they get the more points you get for your fantasy team. You compete against other people in your league.
