When I use my skates, the bearings slow down very often. I think the problem is that dirt gets into the bearings and the lube I'm using (WD-40) wears out quickly. I am thinking about using a silicone based grease on the ball bearings. Is that okay? Is there any other type of lubercant that you recommend that is high performance?

Your right WD-40 will wear out quickly. In fact it probably does a better job cleaning that lubricating. There is actually bearing grease that you can by at your local car part store. It will come in a squeeze tube but you should hand pack them (basically squish the grease in with your fingers). This is assuming the bearings are an open style where you can see the balls inside the bearing races. (closed style bearings should only be replaced). The only other option i could think of is a spray chain lubricant. But I'm not sure this would be your best solution. Grease or chain lube is made to stay on longer. Just make sure you do a routine cleaning and re-greasing.

WD-40 is a solvent lubricant. That means it cleans and lubricates. The problem w/ WD-40 is that it also evaporates. I would use WD-40 to clean the bearings and then get a tube of dry graphite. You can get this at a hardware store. Be careful to use a little paper under where you work and dont get it on you. This stuff doesn't come out easily. Good Luck!
