A polyp is a growth and of course uterine refers to the uterus, therefore a uterine polyp is a small growth on the uterus. Polyps occur everywhere on the body and while most are benign, others can become malignant. With a uterine polyp, the normal method is to biopsy it (take a small sample) to determine whether it is benign or malignant and if it is non-malignant, we may use laser to remove it. If it is malignant, we may need to do surgery to remove the affected tissue and use follow-up therapy. Most uterine polyps are benign. However this is a good case for the use of Pap's smears...a simple test to eliminate or reduce the risk of cancer. If a Pap's smear is negative, then the polyp is benign but should still be removed. I am a physician.

It is a small growth inside the uterus. It is usually non-cancerous. I think Webmd said 99% of the time. Although they should be tested, it is usually nothing to worry about.
