I have a cable modem hooked up to a wireless router, which is connected directly to a desktop computer. I also have a laptop that used to be able to connect to the internet through the router but literally one day just stopped working.
The internet on the desktop still works fine, but on the laptop it tries to "Aquire an IP address" for ever and then says "limited or no connectivity". I tried doing the "Repair" option but that didnt solve the problem. I also tried reseting the modem and router and everything to but still no joy.
Any other ideas?

Reset encryption codes in both teh router and the laptop. The laptop will never acquire teh address if it has the wrong encryption key.

I'm not totally sure, but there it might be in a situation where it is set to give the one computer the same IP, and the other computer is requesting that IP too, but the router can't give out the same IP to both. I would figure that it would give them both different ones if that happened.

Also...neighbors...
I am able to get right into my neighbors wireless signal (I have one too though)..but.. there thing is not secure so I can just type in 192.168.0.1 and type in the default user/pass and change anything right there and they wouldn't know what hit them..kind of unlikely..but check the IP Range the router can give out.

First, If the internet of the desktop works fine, then it is something about the wireless, and not about the router. The first thing I would do wold be to update the firmware of the router. And re set everything back.

If that doesn't solve the problem, then check if a different laptop is able to log into the network. If it is, then, re install your laptop's OS. If it doesn't, then is time to check for warranty.

Try to manualy change the IP address on the laptop or plug the both in to the router and unplug the power source from the router and give it about 10 seconds and then plug it back in. once they both read a steady signal restart your cable modem.

By any chance, do you have a d-link router? If yes, great, the same thing happened to me and the solution will probably work. If not, aw well, i'll still tell you the below advice.

Try changing the wireless encryption from WPA or WPA2 to something older like WEP. That fixed my problem.

Good Luck!

I had the same problem identically. My husband came up with something called Winsock XP Fix. He stored it on my desktop and I've had to use it a few more times since the original.

Also, I have Time Warner/Road Runner service. I used "Release IP" then "Renew IP" on Road Runner Medic. This also helped, but use the WinSock first.

Try resetting the wireless router. Hold in the reset button with a bent open paperclip for approx. 10 sec.

On my laptop I have a wireless button that needs to be pushed in order for my wireless to work. Make sure (if you have one) that yours is lit up also.

I have a laptop with wireless internet too and sometimes it does the exact same thing yours does. When it does I have found that the only thing that works for me - and it sounds really dumb- is a simple system restore, dunno why it works but it fixes the problem everytime.

sure sounds like a setting on your laptop, or maybe your wireless thingy in the laptop died
