VII
after the V is adding so it's 7
IIV
before is subtraction so it would be 3

VII is 7 III is 3. from 1 through 10 the roman nunerals are:
1=I
2=II
3=III
4=IV
5=V
6=VI
7=VII
8=VIII
9=IX
10=X
When the smaller # is in front of the larger # you subtract the smaller # from the larger #.

Roman numbers or better roman numeral es, because they aren't NUMBERS, they are letters, used like numbers, are easy (more ore less) to understand, if you follow the rules.

Roman numerals use a basic set of seven symbols:
Symbol Value
I or i 1 or one
V or v 5 or five
X or x 10 or ten
L or l 50 or fifty
C or c 100 or one hundred (centum)
D or d 500 or five hundred
M or m 1000 or one thousand (mille)

Multiple "symbols", or letters, may be combined to produce numbers in between these values, subject to certain rules on repetition. In cases where it may be shorter, it is sometimes allowable to place a smaller symbol before a larger value, so that, for example, one may write IV or iv for four. Again, for the numbers not assigned a specific symbol, the above given symbols are combined.

* II or ii for two,
* III or iii for three,
* IV, iv, IIII or iiii for four,
* VI or vi for six,
* VII or vii for seven,
* VIII or viii for eight,
* IX or ix for nine.

Add it for after the number, subtract it for before the number.
So:

VII = 7 but IV = 4

It's 7. Smaller numerals in front- subtract; smaller numerals in back- add.

When the 'I' is in front, it means subtract, when it's after, it means add.

screw roman numerals anyway. get a watch, not a sundial.
