Ok, if we want to stay somewhere cheap when we go to Melbourne (from rural victoria, australia) we stay at the Victoria Hotel. Its not a rat trap & actually has a bit of old world charm about it. Easy to walk to everything you want & fairly cheap. Make sure you go to the Casino while you are there as there are some great attractions there (fire balls etc). If you like you can even go down Chapel Street or Lygon Street (depending what type of bar you want). Go to Federation Square for a day visit & the Bourke Street Mall has some great shops. If you really want to shop you can go to either one of the DFO's (Essendon & Dandenong). There is the Zoo & the Aquarium if your into that type of thing too. Lygon street or Southbank (along the Yarra where the casino is) is where you will find your best eats. Have fun! :)

I was down in Melbourne for the Aussie Open last January, and stayed at the Quest on William. It was around $100 CAD per night, which is a bit up there, but was nice b/c you get your own kitchen, so you can save a few buck there. Try wotif.com - they sometimes have some sellout deals. Melbourne is Australia's sports event capital. They get the Aussie open, the grand prix, just had the commonwealth games....check your events calendar. Compared to Sydney, Melbourne is much more friendly to pedestrians. You can walk and explore very easily. As for food, head across the river to the St Kilda beach area. Tons of great eats. Apparently there is a groovy little restaurant where you pay whatever you think the meal deserves! I didn't get a chance to go, but it just sounded cool. I had a fab meal at a place called Clay Pots in St Kilda beach. Tasty tasty food!
