Why does a cake stay in the oven for an hour? That's how long it takes until it's ready - sorry for the weak analogy, but basically, 9 month is mother nature's tried and tested length of time for the baby to properly mature, form and grow inside the womb

It doesn't has to but it is suppose to stay in the womb for 40 weeks. If it is born before then then it hasn't finished growing and you have a very sick baby on your hands. My son was born at 32 weeks due to toxemia..........he was born blue and didn't respond and when they finally got him to breath he spent the next 4 weeks hooked up to machines and tubes so that it was hard to even touch him. Yes he survived and yes he is now a happy 7 year old faced with asthma and other breathing difficulties as well as some learning issues although none are severe. He was behind his peers in some ways all because he didn't have that 40 weeks to fully develop.

That is how long it takes to fully develop the vital parts of the body before birth. The baby starts out as a mass of cells, it takes time for those cells to develop into bones, tissue and organs. Some organs take longer to develop than others, the lungs being one of the last.

That's how long it takes for the baby to develop before it can survive outside of the womb. Gestation varies depending on the type of animal. For a dog it is about 64 days, for a horse it is a year, for an elephant it is a year and a half.

technically it's almost 10 months. However, it does not have to stay in the mothers womb that long. Many babies are born prematurely. I've heard of infants surviving from as early as 5 months along.

Nine months is the standard gestational period for a human. All animals have different gestational periods. Mice have babies really quickly. Elephants carry them for 2 years.

That's just how long it takes for the human to go from egg/sperm to blastocyst, embryo, fetus, human, ready to pop. It takes them that long to grow and mature.

It takes another 12-13 years to begin transformation to an adult (puberty) and another 4-6 years to completly become an adult. Then you hit 40 and it's all downhill from there.

Because it has to grow strong within the womb until it is strong enough to survive in the outside world. A baby cannot survive outside the womb without skin, eyelids, and lungs.. all things that take plenty of time to develop.

A baby doesnt develop over night...9 months is the time the fetus needs to develop all vital organs to live outside the womb.....

Like one of the people above said... same reason a cake stays in the oven for an hour...

if you take it out before the timer goes off, your cake will be mushy and uncooked on the inside. It will not be as "fluffy" as it was supposed to be. So, same with a baby... if it comes out earlier... it will be "uncooked" on the inside and wont be as "fluffy" on the outside.

Because while it's in the mother, it's writing a song, and it takes nine months to write the song. OBVIOUSLY.
