when i was a freshman in high school in guantanamo bay Cuba in 92. i remember my English teacher handing this book out and saying "feel lucky the kids in the states can't read this book because it been banned" i never understood why when it's a great book

if your talking about the cussing in the book we used worse cuss words than the book lol

That is most likely because it contains vulgarity, violence, and sexual content (Chandler).

But I do not believe it should be banned. Almost all of my favorite books, Catcher in the Rye, Harry Potter, To Kill a Mockingbird...are on the banned list. Ridiculous.

Not only because of inappropriate content but, because, he drops the "F bomb"
When it came time for us to read Catcher in the Rye my teacher sent home permission slips. Most parents even though they had not read the book its self had heard all the hype about it and would not allow their children to read it. I did not read it until college.
When my son was a senior in high school it was on their reading list. He did not see what the big deal was all about. He did enjoy the story though.

god question. ive read it like 5 times and still dont get why we cant read it. as sad as it seems, its probly because of the cussing. i mean, harry potter is banned form some schools becauce of magic. its pretty pathetic.

Because Salinger references a prostitute. I can't remember if Hallie visits one or just refers to one though.

It wasn't banned in the US. I read it my freshman year, and I live in Athens, Ohio.
