What is appropriate to wear to a hip-hop dance class? I also noticed that my sneakers keep on squeaking when I spin or turn. What can I do to prevent this?

For any dancing, I highly recommend proper dance shoes. They will make your life a lot easier. You'll get better a lot faster. Dance sneaker or jazz shoes should be ok. It is always better to buy your dance shoes in a store where you can try them on. But if that is not available - look on-line. www.allaboutdance.com and many other websites would have them. Dance shoes don't squeak. They have the traction with the floor wich is just right, unlike the street shoes that stick to the floor.

For the clothes, I'd recommend something comfortable, that's for sure. Not jeans - they are not stretchy enough. Many dancers wear all black for practice. That is done for a reason. You want to be able to see what lines are you producing with your body. For that purpose, it is the best to have the pants and shirt of a matching solid color. Black is the easiest. You can mix and match your practice clothes.

I am a hip hop dancer and teacher. I pop, lock, and do a little breakdancing. I am also a battle dancer. Dont wear JAZZ clothes or shoes to a HIP HOP class...i still dont know why people think that's appropriate or even cool. Wear sneakers. Wear some loose pants and a tank. with experience you can find clothes that compliment your dance style. Dont wear a shirt that is too loose because you want be able to see your movement as well. for pants i recommend Adidas sweat pants or loose wind breaker type pants.

about the shoes...a lot of hip hop dancers are wearing lightweight PUMA shoes. They're so light and dont squeak. I've worked with professionals that wear these. Almost every breakdancer i know has a pair and they are the ones doing the most with their feet.

Get yourself some comfortable clothes. I mean, when you go putting you new moves to work, you won't be wearing a leotard! Also, get some jazz shoes. They are so comfortable, I wear mine even when I'm not dancing. You'll know them because they have no bridge connecting the heel and the toe. You can find them with a little dimple on the ball of the foot for turning. They should work fine.

It's hard to turn in sneakers, wear half sole lyrical shoes or learn to go on the balls of your feet. Leotard and Jazz Pants are best.

pants.... NO shorts because of floor-work, you dont want to get burns on your knees. loose fitting t-shirt and definitely sneakers. you could try baby powder for the squeakiness, but be careful. it could make your shoes really slide-y depending on the type- try it out at home first.
