Ok, we say U.S.A. as in the United States of AMERICA. We like to shorten it for our pleasure. We know that the continent of North America consists of Mexico, the USA, and Canada. We know that South and Central America has nothing to do with us either. In no way (at least a very vast majority, some weird ones may) do we consider Canada or Mexico or any other country ours. So we call it our country because its more simple.

North America is a continent. America is a country...whose name is shortened to that, instead of the long form "The United States of America". Similar to that we usually use names such as China instead of the correct name as "The Peoples' Republic of China", and there are many more. It is not confusing unless you begin to talk about divided countries and then we have to use either the correct name or again, we shorten it to North Korea, South Korea, East Germany, West German.

America is not "a" continent, it's two continents. And to those Americans who say that they take up most of the continent, Canada is far larger, also there are other countries that make up North America.

Because we don't feel like saying "The United States of America" all the time and we presume that all people are smart enough to know what we are talking about.

Simply because we Americans are called Americans.. and we kinda have a conceded sense about us.. I have family from Ireland and so I tend to say "in the States"... but that is just what I have noticed..
