HIV lies dormant inside the first cell it infects. The body's system doesn't realize it's there, and the body can't make antibodies to combat the virus since they've never seen it before (when it hits the cell it mutates and makes a unique "provirus" combined of the HIV virus and the cell's virus).

Because of this, HIV overflows your body since they don't know how to make antibodies for this virus (think of the common cold, it can take weeks to get over that, and it's one of the simplest viruses known to man. Even so, we still don't have a vaccine for it after decades of research).

Because HIV eats white blood cells. White blood cells protect the body from other viruses and bacteria. HIV won't kill you, but the pneumonia you catch after the HIV has decimated your white blood cells probably will.

Because HIV finds and attacks the cells that fight off disease and its pretty much a losing battle for your immunity. HIV kills you by destryoing your immunity and making it easy for you to die from something as simple as the common cold.

In a small number of people, it can. And the simple reason is because the virus attacks the white cells that try and kill it.

Because it is an auto immune disease. It attacks your immune system first...which is supposed to be the first row of defense soldiers in the body. It sabotages your immune system into thinking that their fellow soldiers are their enemies too...thus killing among themselves. It weakens the defense mechanism of the entire body and the body eventually succumbs to the disease.
