Yes, unfortunately I had no choice but to conceal the fact from those around me.

It was years ago while in Chicago on business. Being an insomniac I had nothing better to do than to explore the nightlife and by a combination of bad luck and lack of judgement wound up in Cabrini Green.
I believe it was about 60 blocks on foot before I was comfortable enough to take the map out of my back pocket.
I was told afterwards by a colleague that I was fortunate to escape alive, let alone conscious and unscathed. The employees at the hotel were beside themselves and informed me that the odds of my returning the way I did were astronomical.
I knew I was in a bad neighborhood and it was enough to make me paranoid- what I didn't know was how bad it was until afterwards. I wasn't aware that this was the worst neighborhood in the city.
This coupled with an experience in Laos that was equally disturbing has resulted in an extreme reluctance to ever ask for directions no matter where I am.
I myself am more paranoid about it than embarassed.

No, I am not ashamed to admit I have no idea where the hell I am or what way I am going...I will ask for help b/c afterall I do have a destination - and why waste time when you can just ask and laugh it off!
