What is everybody's take on NASCAR's image? We all know the stereotypes like rednecks, ignorance, and poor people being attracted to the sport. We also know that NASCAR has a continues battle with their cousin sport of Formula 1 racing. We all know that minorities are not a large fan base, and we know that lots of Confederate flags are raised during a NASCAR event. What does everbody think of the above images listed? Do they add to NASCAR's special roots, or does it make NASCAR look bad? Are you okay with the current image NASCAR has? Or does it not affect you? How would you make it better, if you think it needs changes? I'm strictly speaking about the view of NASCAR be other peoples' standards and not about the drivers or their driving ability.
By the way, I am a NASCAR fan. No haters need apply.

I don't know about others but I do know that Nascar is the most watched sport in America. Nascar has become a billion dollar sport and it ticks people off to no end!!
I myself am African-American and a woman so that whole notion that Nascar is a "redneck" sport has been thrown out the window a long time ago. I'm a senior in college and will be getting my Bachelor of Science degree this spring. Nascar fans come from all races, cultures, backgrounds, etc. There are people who don't want to see growth...they want to see hate because that's what some of them live off of.
If a fan wants to fly the Confederate Flag then that's their business. It's their constitutional right. It's part of Nascar's roots,Nascar got it's start in the south! You can't change the roots of the sport.
People need to open their eyes and realize that we are in the year 2006...not 1976!

What the press says or any of these other yippie yahoo's say about Nascar's image means squat to me and my family. There will always be comparisons to other motor sports. The media has a blast yipping away about things. If people want to call me a redneck, dumb for sitting watching cars go around and around, or what ever else they want to they can go right ahead. I know that this sport is great. It is the one sport that no matter what age you are you can watch, cheer, have a "Daytona" party with your family and not have to watch them fight, swear, umpires/referee's do bad call etc. (what minor incidents that happen are nothing). I am a Nascar fan and proud of it. Some of these people need to learn more about it: some of the technical stuff, how much these driver's and owners do for many charities, etc. Nascar is a great sport. They need not change anything. See you at the race's!

NASCAR started in the south so, the south will, probably always be the heart of the fan base. as for F-1, I dont see much of a battle.
most of F-1's problems were self initiated. as far as race (not the one on the track), I seem to see a few more minorities at each race that I attend. NASCAR started a driver diversity program a couple of years ago, headed by Magic Johnson(I'm still trying to figure that one out Myself) so soon We should start seeing more minority drivers as they move up through the ranks. a few of the old fans will not like it but, they will just have to fall by the wayside. in order to grow, You have to adapt and, NASCAR is growing. they are even working to get races outside the U.S.

The only time I have had a problem with Nascar's image is when the fans throw beer cans on the track. I wasn't happy with Vickers either but that kind of behavior gives the sport a black eye.

Nascar's image should be based on attracting one thing nascar fans. race, income, flags, all the garbage in the press should have nothing to do with it. fans come in all shapes size and color. nascars image should attracting race fans that enjoy and like to watch racing. the other stuff is bull****

Well, I'm personally fine with the image, and 75 million others are too, but people who don't know the sport look at it and think that it's only for unsophisticated, uneducated rednecks. So, once you start to like the sport you actually feel comfortable, but I think that it does tend to initially deter people.
However, if people at races started dressing in suits and ties, I'm out!
