Hobo or tramp -- and this practice went out long ago -- but was a favorite during the great depression when individuals would 'hop' on the trains to go to a new destination and try to find work.

They usually call you dead. People die trying to hitch rides on trains. It not a good idea to try.

Most correct is hopper, since a hopper may ride 2 miles or 2000 miles....a hobo or tramp lives near trainyards, and uses them to move around the country. When you hitch a ride, you're a hopper, when you live your life "hopping" then you're a hobo/tramp.
