The 1968-1972 Chevrolet Chevelle/Malibu series was one of GMs "A" body cars, sharing basic dimensions and major structural parts with Buick Skylark,Olds Cutlass/F85,and Pontiac Tempest/LeMans/GTO.Each manufacturer used their own V8 engines (some shared 6s) and either Chevy (GM corporate) or B-O-P axle designs. The 68-72 A body was the 2nd generation GM mid sizer, with the 1st gen covering 1964-1967.These cars were a direct reply to the "Mid Size" Ford Fairlane and Mercury Meteor from 1962.GMs previous "senior compact" cars from 1961-1963 included Buick Special,Olds F85,and Pontiac Tempest (cars built off the Corvair platform).
1971 marked the beginning of the end of the musclecar era.Engine HP figures started to be reported in NET HP rather than GROSS HP.Basically, rating an engine as it would be installed rather than a stripped engine on a test stand (with no exhaust or accessories).Malibu was a trim series on the basic Chevelle series.2 door hardtops,4 door coupes,4-door hardtops, and wagons were offered as well as El Camino (the car-truck) however it was marketed as a Chevy truck rather than a car.For 1973 the whole A body family was redesigned to be heavier, more able to withstand a rollover, and to meet federal bumper requirements. The car got bloated and the muscle look was gone forever.
