I chose a screensaver, hit apply then O.K. but still nothing. I am new at using a computer, did I hit a wrong button or something to make it not work?

Screen savers are obviously sensitive to mouse movement and go away when a person moves the mouse. Sometimes, the settings may be so sensitive that the screensavers stops at the smallest of mouse movements, like how it moves once you hit a button.

Also, there is a time limit before the screensaver pops up. Simply pressing ok will not start the screen saver. Suppose you set the time to 2 minutes, then you have to wait 2 minutes without moving the mouse or pressing a key or clicking anything for the screensaver to pop up.

Additionally, to preview the screensaver immediately, press the preview button, and don't move the mouse. The screensaver should immediately come up and will go away when you move your mouse.

Press F8 when the blue screen comes on after you've turned the computer on, and go from there. Wang?
