It's a Light Emitting Diode that the phone uses to take pictures if you turn it on. You have the choice of either using the flash or not. When you take a picture with a digital camera do you see a flash of light when you snap it? That's what the led does. Provides light.

It's a flash for the camera, but it's a Light Emitting Diode(LED) instead of a normal flash, because LED's are much smaller
