The answers from the previous fellows are possibilities. But to be honest, there is no way for any of them to say "this is the reason".

Yes, indeed, you could have a virus. However, spy-ware will not restart your computer. Another software cause could be incompatibility with some driver currently installed.

In the other hand, if the problem comes from hardware, it could be any peripheral, (hard drive, video card, etc) which is starting to decay, or that is too dirty. Another reason could be overheating.

Try these steps to see if you solve it. Check the BIOS to see the temperature. See if the fans are working properly. If they aren't, fix that as soon as possible because you could burn the CPU. I would recommend to clean every part of your computer, specially CPU, and maybe add some thermal paste to it.

When you start the computer again, do it with only the minimum hardware required (CPU, motherboard, main hard drive, memory, and video card). If it goes OK, then keep adding parts, one by one. If it fails, then you know what part is giving the problem.

If with the minimum it gave problems, then try fixing the software. The first step would be checking for viruses. If that comes out clean, try repairing the volume. If the OS is Win XP, Go to the command prompt, in run > cmd, and type chkdsk /f.

With mac would be "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly". Then go to the utilities folder and under disk management, repair the disk permissions. I am guessing I'm losing my time with mac, since it would not be giving those problems at all.

If after that it still does the same, backup your data and make a fresh install of the operative system.

At this point, you should have covered everything. If it still do the same, then is some of your hardware. For that, you will need a part to test with, and my advice is , if you're not an expert, take the computer to someone who is.

Hope it helps.

Most likely a virus. A very fuzzy virus. Try doing a virus scan in the 15 minutes you have to do so. If you can't find it by doing it like that then get it to a computer specialist and have them take the virus off. However it can be fixed by simply having your computer go to a starting point that you chose.

Right click on the your Desktop slide down to properties, go to Screen Saver Tab, go to power, go to Power Schemes and ensure that Turn off Hard disk is set to the Max 5hours or Never. Then ensure that the Standby Tab has a selection of "Never". Then click on the Advanced Tab and go down to Power buttons and at the sentence that says" When I press the power button on my computer" select shutdown. Finally go to hibernation and ensure there is no check mark in " Enable Hibernation"! Be happy you are done!

It sounds like you have a system problem, not a virus. The usual causes for random shutdowns are:
>Overheating triggers auto-shutdown to protect the CPU;
>Memory module going bad;
>Power supply going bad.
