I have a half barrel with a liner in it for goldfish. All I have is a pump bringing water to the top and thru a piece of batting.

start by putting fish rocks on the bottom of the tank, you can buy fish rocks at pet stores like petco and petsmart, but do not use other rocks and only use fish rocks, buy food and some fake plants and you can buy fake plants at the place where you find fish rocks along with your fish! Water too, no saltwater just freshwater, i recommend arrowhead. and ta da a fish bowl that has entertainment and everything and to top it off get a fish home at petco or petsmart!

you sound like you are going in the right direction but first i warn you that you are setting this up rather late in the season...how cold does it get where you live? will the barrel freeze solid this winter? if so, don't put any fish in it till next spring, they will all die...if not, then add a nice plant and a couple of fish and Viole!
you have a pond...you might want to add some sort of filter, either a sponge filter or a box filter would be good
good luck and enjoy your pond

To set up a pond in the yard design the shape and size of the pond. Dig the appropriate sixe hole then line the hole with thick plastic (can be bought at wal-mart). Place in any decorations you want in the pond with the pump in the center of the pond. You can get help from wal-mart on the proper chemicals to avoid moss growth. Good Luck.

u will need some water conditioner..to take out chlorine or chloramines.. depends where u live , let it run for 1or 2 days.. then bring a baggie of water to the fish store for a test...does your pump have a sponge on it?? if so u can rinse it about once a week ( in bottle water or a cup of your fish water , cause tap water will kill good bacteria that is growing on it)..if u are in the warmer areas u can put some water plants in it too..
