A chrysalis is the chamber in which an insect metamorphoses (changes form) from the infant form to the adult form.

The chrysalids is about a bunch of humans who are very strict about the human form because their world is a world where there are mutations galore. The mutants are cast out into the badlands - thought to be uninhabitable - to die, but they are in fact surviving and banding together.

Sort of like the X-men comics/movies.

It's about change in society and not teasing people who are different from you.
