When I was quite young and first learned of what isolationism really was, I was all for it. But we are now in the midst of a movement towards globalization on a much grander scale. We need to cooperate and partner up with other nations, not only for ourselves, but for the betterment of this world. Otherwise, we will be left behind (especially now with the economic emergence of China). Sounds quite idealistic, but it's the direction in which we've been heading for years now.

Much of Americas history was based on isolationism.
Now politicians believe they need to fix every problem in the world.
I believe the real solution is relative & it's somewhere between the two. There are othe nations - with power - who manage quite nicely, without trying to impose their will on everyone. They accept that they will not always get their own way.
When W first took power he said he was going to be less domineering & humbler in world politics than previous presidents - so much for that. Of course, he also said he would be a uniter rather than a divider - didn't see much of that either.
Perhaps the biggest change the USA could make is to first become oil independent & then energy independent. With 300 million Americans, 35 million Canadians & 110 million Mexicans & a bunch more Central Americans we could have a trading group of half a billion people. We could have a better quality of life, without having to dominate world trade. If we have all the energy we need, who cares what happens in the OPEC countries ?

It's not a bad idea, but it's not possible. Actually, (and it will hurt you to hear this) Isolationism is a conservative idea. But we have a world economy now and as the only remaining super power and largest economy, we cannot isolate ourselves.
Addtionally, by that do you mean we should let another million die in Darfur? Personally, I'm against that.

In theory i agree, but we do have a number of things that we can not produce for ourselves, or at least cost effectively, so it is a balancing act
