Alaska is an extreemly big state. It has a variety of temperatures. In the Southeast of AK, you often have winters very similar to North-Western Washington, perhapse a little colder. In South Centeral AK the temperature usually hangs around freezing (give or take a few degrees) In centeral AK the temperatures can get quite cold, just like in the central lower 48, the average is around 20 below zero. Northern Alaska can be colder still.

In addition to the accurate average data CB posted, I would add that the following cities down to first temp given most winters for a while and down to the second temp every 10 or so years (making it almost a worst-case "design temperature")

Juneau: 10F, -10F

Kenai/Soldotna: -25F, -40F

Anchorage: -20F, -35F (bit of an urban heat island effect)

Fairbanks: -40F, -55F (which is just fricking cold!)

McGarth had a -75F in January 1989. See http://www.gi.alaska.edu/ScienceForum/ASF9/912.html

Have you heard of Absolute Zero?

If you haven't, don't take the chance of going there.
