You need DVD copying software such as DVD Shrink, AnyDVD,or One Click.

You can copy DVD movies directly in their vob format to your hard disc by merely selecting all in the "opened" DVD in your drive. However, this would not be advisable since the vob formats would be very bulky [3 - 4 GB size].

Converting the movie to avi, would be a better option; because this will reduce the file size to a more manageable one. Video Convertrers come costly, so, you'd do better to use the Converter that you got free with the bundled software that they gave you when you bought the DVD Player/Writer.

You could also use Windows Movie Maker which will shrink the movie into a very small size. If you have Windows XP, it has come along with the SP2 in your Automatic Updates. If you can't find it, then you can download it for free at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

Hope this helps.

All the best.

Cheers

you need to make sure that your computer has dvd codecs.
normally, if you have a dvd-rom drive, it means your computer is already capable of dvd coding and decoding.
Then, you must have a software that converts dvd files (*.vob) to *.wmv or *.mpg. One that i recommend is TMGEnc software. Then you load your DVD disck in your drive, then open the software, pick a template of what type of output you would like to have, then browse for the file in you Disk Drive, set the path where you want the output to be saved in your hard drive. then Start Encoding.

easiest way is use your burn program. go thorough the program like you are going to burn a copy and an option will be to save it to hard drive to burn later.
