understand that to truly live your life in a practical way you need to understand that Jesus died for everybodies sins, past present, and future. Also understand that Jesus fulfilled all of the Old Testament Laws and so we do not have to stress and strain over the myriad laws in the OT. Jesus gave us some new laws:
1) Love the Lord you God with all your heart, mind and soul.
2) Love your neigbour as yourself.
By following these two simple laws you can not break any of the previously thousands of laws from the OT.
So the practical solution is to bear in mind these two simple laws and you can not ever go wrong.
Should you be angry with a neighbour who's tree sheds leaves and branches on your lawn? Check rule 2
Should you drink and drive? Check Rule 2
Should you litter? Check rule 1 & 2
Should you swear? Check rule 1
Should you work in an environmentally disastrous company? Check rule 1& 2
See living life in a practical way as a Christian is very simple.

Consider everything you read in the bible in the context that it was written. Though it may well have been inspired by God (how many authors have used that line on a stubborn publisher?) it was stil written and translated by human hands guided by human minds, and those minds were living in a very different context than you do (Bible writers lived in a bronze-age, semi-nomadic desert-dwelling tribe of shepperds, whereas you live in the 21st century and have Internet access).
This doesn't mean the Bible isn't valuable. Far from it, it just means you have to use your own judgement when you read it. I'm not going to launch into a long blast about how the Bible contradicts itself and all that, 'cause I'm sure you don't want to hear it. What I will say is just this:
God gave you a brain, and the ability to use it for more than just reading a book. Put that gift of intellegent thought to good use. If God exists and is all knowing, then he knew the book he inspired would be used by people living in 21st century cities. He would have known that the life that we face today is very different from the life of his Bible authors. And he would hope that those who believe in him would have, by this time, learned how to figure some things out for themselves (that's why he gave you that brain, after all).

Start with the 10 Commandments, they were designed to guide Christians through life. Be sure the messages you take from the bible are generally agreed to be accurate, read as much as you can about the bible to make sure your views aren't being corrupted by Dogma outside of the Bible.
