There were slaves owned by the White House until Lincoln ended the practice. So even if they were technically the property of the republic the Presidents proceding him didn't stop it.

yes...George Washington was a plantation owner but he let them go...Thomas Jefferson was a slave owner who tried to make slavery illegal, however he was a hypocrite because he never freed his slaves.
