You need a big population base.
A Major League team will host 81 home games and you have to bring in at least 2 million people in during the course of a season. That's 25,000+ per game.
You have your die-hard fans who'll buy season tickets and that will get you started, but most casual fans are only going to a couple of games a year.
If you don't have a population base of at least a couple of million within reasonable driving distance, making these #'s is a challenge

In the early parts of the century, they didn't have any cities large enough to support a team. Since then, whenever there's been expansion or a team moving, there's always been another, larger city that offers the team or league a better deal.
While they've never had a major league team, a number of minor league teams have called the state home (notably the AAA-level Memphis Redbirds; the AA Chattanooga Lookouts, West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, and Tennessee Smokies; and 4 teams in the rookie Appalachian League).

Prolly cuz the same reason 34 other states don't have one. . . I don't know if Minor League team is considered a major league team. I highly doubt it, but Arkansas is getting a Minor League Baseball Team in 2 years.

Baseball season coincides with Nascar Season. Therefore there would not be much focus on the baseball team.

Because everyone is too busy writing songs about dead dogs, tractors, and achy breaky hearts. Besides Randy Johnson is the only person who is legally still allowed to sport a mullet.

I don't know, personally if a state can support a NBA and NFL team then they can support an MLB team.

It would take most of them too long to learn how to spell the team's name.
