Just wondering, because most people seem to think if you're white and walk through an all black neighborhood, you die or come close to it. Do these people think all black neighborhoods are like this? I think if you walk though the hood, you have a chance of getting jumped no matter what the color. Is there a difference between Black neighborhoods and the ghetto, or do people actually think they are synonomous?

In all fairness I think the people make the assumption, have never had any personal contact with a family of any other race or culture other than white, and they believe all black folks live in the ghetto. Ignorance is bliss. The simply do not know any better. These are the same people that if a black family moved close to them they would sell their home and move. Because they would be truly afraid. I think these are the same people who's only contact or information about people of color comes from the stereotypes they see on television. However, slowly but surely these are also changing. Sad but true. Just my opinion. There are some neighborhoods i would not walk in at night and they are not just black neighborhoods there are some very bad white neighborhoods in this country, Columbus Ohio there is a murder every day. At least one and for the record they have plenty of white folks. God Bless

I grew up in a very nice all black neighborhood. I came from the prejudice south and moved to the north into an all black neighborhood. It was a great experience not growing up around prejudice people. It allowed me to have a great childhood. It is a big difference between the ghetto and black neighborhood. The people who live in the ghetto moved into our neighborhood and everything went down at first. Then the people from the ghetto started learning about ways of making the community better and improving their own life and the two groups of people began to get along. It took some patience and understanding from each other before they could get along.

Yes there is a difference between a black neighborhood and a ghetto neighborhood. For a neighborhood to be ghetto it doesn't have to consist of black people it could be a all hispanic neighborhood. Just because a neighborhood is all black doesn't mean that u will be likely to get jumped, shot at, or even killed. It's all a STEREOTYPE!

All of that is stereotypes. They know in the ghetto something is going to happen. Since the ghetto are mainly or mostly inhabited by blacks the assume all black neighborhoods are bad. My neighborhood isn't bad, we just have very loud talkative teens who like to hang out with numerous friends in the street or driveway late at night, while heading home. The difference lies within the people and the enviroment of the neighborhood. For example, there's difference in economics in the suburbs versus the ghetto.

In general a black neighborhood is together because it is a cheap place to live. Unfortunately our society has made it difficult to go from poor to good life easily and unfortunately many turn to drugs or crime as a way to get rich easily. It is not fair to say that this is only indicative of black neighborhoods, we have our white gettos also. Anytime you have you a poor neighborhood you are bound to find some that are trying to escape quickly and usually that escape is through drugs or crime. So, being through any poor neighborhood regardless whether it is black or white is not a safe thing to do especially at night.
I wish there was an easier way to get people from being poor but with all our money going to fighting war and helping poor in other countries there is little left to help our own people. What a shame.
Thanks!

Ghettos aren't just a term used for run down black neighborhoods. There are run down places were whites live and all other races. I am black and i wouldn't walk through certain neighborhoods its just called being safe. I haven't seen a place with all one race living there. It may have one white family or one black or Asian or whatever.

depends on what city you are talking about. New york has a bad reputation, and many of the neighborhoods are ghettos, and predominantly black. Any poor neighborhood is more likely to be a higher crime area, at least a higher violent crime area.

I think, as you've thought for me, that walking through a "black neighborhood" gives me a better chance of "getting jumped". Synonymity is purely subjective in this instance, no?

Its a common misconseption. Neighborhoods are mixed and there is no real "ghetto". Its like our neighborhood with some white people, mexicans, native americans, and other races. It is different in that there is a high crime rate. Thats all.
