Had already upgraded to Windows XP on a home PC about 5 years old. Crashed the other day and couldn't start it at all. Decided after lots of deliberation to restore factory settings, but couldn't complete process without without ME disk.

ME was already installed when I bought it (OEM, right?) Trying to use the XP disk I've got, but can't do this in Safe Mode (the only way I can get into any operational Windows).

I'm at a loss. Any suggestions (apart from "Get a new computer")?

You do not do it from Safe Mode. Enter your computers BIOS (usually by pressing DEL during boot) and set it to boot from CD. Insert your WinXP install CD and reboot. Then simply follow the onscreen instructions. The result will be a complete HD format and a clean install of WinXP.

i was told you cant upgrade me to xp with a upgrade disk you must have the full disk and reformat. also you must have a restore disk when you got the computer or its in the startup options, along the lines of boot with me or option 2 restore computer. along those lines, you only see it for a few seconds.

sorry but you are going to have to format the drive and reinstall XP from scratch, if your XP is an upgrade version then you are going to have to buy the full version.

Microsoft have you by the proverbials
