piece of cake. just take your handy bar and get under the old shingles and pry up all the roofing nails until you get to the next complete shingle. if you put your bar clear down to the roof boards you will be prying up on two layers and you should not break the old shingle. but be careful. if your roof is done with staples (used in the late 70's early eightys) Lord help you. then just slip in the new shingle and away you go. remember the new nail will go thru the middle of one shingle and the top of the one below. be aware there are u.s. measure-12 by 36- and metric [larger] so be sure to get the same.

It really just depends on how the existing roof shingles ended. (i.e., how big the last ones are) I would recommend that you remove enough of the old shingles so that you don't leave the plywood seam, the tar paper seam, and the shingle seam all stacked on top of one another.

Other than that, you would just follow the pattern that is already there.

shingles r laid out 5" apart and u start with a 36" and then a 30.....this will allow the bonds( the horse shoe looking part) not to over lap over each other .......

just lay out three rows next to the old about 6' wide and rearrange them until they blend. Usually the original was whole, then half, or it could be quarter, half, and full. just site along the tabs to make sure it is straight
