George R. R. Martin said,

When I was a kid, we always felt free and superior watching World War II movies, where those evil Nazis were forever stopping the heroes and demanding to see "their papers." That would never happen to US, we knew. We were Americans. We did not have to carry "papers." Yet now there's talk of a national ID card, and the driver's license has become almost that by default. A driver's license was intended to prove that you were licensed to operate an automobile, yet now all sorts of people demand to see it for all sorts of things. At the bank, at the grocery store, in the airport, in a thousand other places, you have people refusing to allow you to do your business unless you first show your "papers." We have become the very thing that we once despised.

is he wrong? does america still stand for freedom?

I am sorry but after HR 6166, The Military Commission Act of 2006, became law we lost all our freedoms. In part it reads:

The term 'unlawful enemy combatant' means – (i) a person who has engaged in hostilities or who has purposefully and materially supported hostilities against the United States or its co-belligerents who is not a lawful enemy combatant (including a person who is part of the Taliban, al-Qaeda, or associated forces); or (ii) a person who, before, on, or after the date of the enactment of the Military Commissions Act of 2006, has been determined to be an unlawful enemy combatant by a Combatant Status Review Tribunal or another competent tribunal established under the authority of the president or the secretary of defense."

Do you see part 2, if the president says you are an 'unlawful enemy combatant' you are, it also states, in other parts of the same law that once you are arrested you have no right to question it, no court can review it, no bail nothing.

I wish I was making this up but I'm not. Some people will say this isn't true because Fox News said so. Just read the law, see was lawyers are saying about it. Judge it yourself.

Yeah, the freedom to go to war with and bully other nations. The simple fact of the matter is that if America minded it's own business instead of putting it's nose into everything, you wouldn't be having these problems now. The majority of terrorists have got their sights fixed firmly on the U.S., is that just coincidence? When you play sides, and interfere with matters which do not concern you then you're going to make enemies. America is now trying to do its best to thwart those enemies, but a price has to be paid - and that price is part of your civil liberty. By the way they're probably going to introduce ID cards in the UK and everyone knows it's pointless because if terrorists want to they will find a way of forging them, so we're going to be paying for a useless piece of plastic!

In order asked..No, yes, yes..... that was rather a pointless rant by George. Unless you live in a *very* small town where everyone knows everyone else personally, then some form of reliable ID is necessary. Or you could just have anybody walk into your bank and withdraw all your money just by claiming to be you.

We aren't communist and this country still has more freedoms than any other country in the world. Comparing us to Nazis...maybe he needs to look at the Middle East and North Korea.
