There are two kinds of Bamboo, runners and clumpers!
If you go to a reputable garden center and ask for CLUMPING BAMBOO, they will guide you through the choices. NEVER ask for runners, and don't always trust the staff, also read the tags for your self!

Clumping bamboos are what you need. The types to look for are specifically "Chusquea Culeo" and any of the "Fargesia". There are a fair number of Fargesia types.

I have phylostachys nigris planted and it really behaves itself. It only seems to pop up in a straight line along the fence. Really civilised it is. And its a fabulous jet black colour

ask the nursery man which is the new non-invasive kind...if not, you better dig a 3 foot trench to put a blocker.....
