Think of a problem that needs to be solved--one that interests you and gets you thinking. Pretty much any problem will involve controversy because not all will agree on how to solve it. Avoid anything that you've heard argued over and over again (like abortion, the death penalty, etc.--as an instructor, those are the most boring papers to read). Try reading through the newspaper or a news magazine and looking for topic that relates to your life in some way. You are more likely to write a good paper on something you care about.

Begin by thinking of as many questions as you can related to your topic. If you can think of a lot of questions, it will probably be a good topic for research. Your research will begin in looking for answers to those questions.

The death penalty would be a good one. There are easily two different views on that and you could make a good argument either way

Cloning, stem cell research, abortion, seat belt use, mandatory helmet use, cell phones while driving, police chases, national health care, illegal immigration, dependency on foreign oil, deforestation, child labor, minimum wage increases (yes/no/why), big box retailors (good/bad for communities and why/why not), gentrification of urban areas, school funding and property tax equity, reverse racism.

That's it for me!
