I belive it was the Avalanche.

The Colorado Avalanche won the first major championship in the state, winning the 1995-96 Stanley Cup.

The Avalanche won the Stanley Cup (ice hockey) before the Broncos won the Super Bowl.
They did it in their first year as an expansion team. First time it had happened.
