I personally don't think our prison system is succeeding with anything but putting more people into them.
Unfortunately prison has become big business too and along with big business comes $$$$$$s and when $$$$$$s are around you end up with all kinds of politicians getting involved and more laws being instated.

That is just what has happened in the great "U.S." prisons for profit so therefore they need to be filled. In order to be filled the need is for more laws more stringent feloney laws in place inorder to sentence people to prison.
Hence the "U.S." now stands as one if not the world leader in highest prison poplulation..............it all comes down to $$$$$$$s!

If someone is using drugs themselves not selling not commiting anyother crime then what good is a 5-30 year sentence in a federal or state prison going to do for that person?
None just help them to learn how to become more like a criminal and hate the system even more.
For all the money that is spent on one prisoner for drug use to go to jail and usually more then 5 years they could get into some good therapy and good solid community service and perhaps change their life.
We could have them donate X amount of hours a week , month or years to their town or state as a worker until their sentence is up.
During that sentence therapy NA AA and such along with a work program and other type requirments would be benificial to them and their community.
However that is not how our government works there is still blatant discrimination against class and race as far as crimes are concerned ..........just look at the stats and look at the white color criminals and where they go and for how long. And what they still have and recieve when they get out!
Its amazing! And hard to believe we are approaching 2007 and still dont have a clue!

The theory is that they can't get it there -- but of course, they can. Addicts do need a place to dry out, where drugs can not be obtained, and in that environment they would have a chance to stabilize themselves before going back on the street. But there isn't such a place at present and, given human graft, greed and corruption, it is unlikely such a nirvana will ever exist, which makes getting clean and staying clean so very hard for addicts.

People don't go to jail for being drug addicts, they go to jail for breaking the law. It is punishment for commiting a wrong. Prison is the wrong place for anything other than punishment.

Drug addicts should be sent to rehab, not prison. Drug dealers should be sent to prison for feeding destruction.

i think addicts should have a separate prison where rehab is the main focus and the convicts have drug tests every hour.

i don't think they should go to regular prisons. i think they should be tested often while going to rehab unless they are real bad then i think they should be put into a treatment facility.
