First off get a new gas can. They are supposed to be air tight. why do you want to clean a gas can? Unless you spilled gas on the outside of it and are trying to clean that. In that case you can use Brake clean, Seal or close can tightly and spray the hell out of it in a well ventilated area. It evaporates quickly. As for your trunk put sprinkle some baking soda in it and leave the trunk open for a few hrs. Then vacuum the baking soda up.
And don't make the next question be how do I get the gas smell out of my vacuum cleaner!
Change the bag!

I hope you had just gone to the gas station to fill up the gas can. You sure wouldnt want to keep it in there because during the day when it gets hot in there the gas will expand be very dangerous. As for getting the smell out of your trunk open the trunk lid so fresh air can get in there and let it air out for several hours. I would also get some Dow Scrubbing Bubbles and spray in there and when it dries up vacuum it out.

first thing, never have an empty or full gas can in your car, once the gas can has had fuel in it, it will always have that smell, second unless you really need one in your car then take it out when you get home and make sure it's in a well ventilated area and not an enclosed room (garage, shed)
