What if you knew the person they were speaking of? Would you repeat it because it was just too much information?

it depends if the issue is too personal then try to keep it a secret.

if its meant to be spread around (like this coworker will be promoted in ten days or this coworker will fly abroad in company's expense), then there is no real hurt done when the news is spread around.

If someone told you something in confidence about someone that you know, it's just that....."confidence". They trust that you won't tell anyone else......but if it's malicious gossip or something illegal then you have an obligation to confront the person that told you this thing... to get the facts straight. Gossip is not something that's "confident" or a "secret"...and of course...well we all know what happens if you find out someone's doing something illegal.
It has to be up to you to do the right thing. If this co-worker was just generally speaking about someone in confidence even if it's way too much information.....then just try and block it from your mind...like that one person suggested, if you're afraid you'll blurt it out.....write an email to that person and then delete it instead of sending....or write a letter and burn it....
Good luck

No because I can keep a secret and it was in confidence. If you really feel like you're going to blurt it out then try writing it in an email to a friend and be sure to delete the email rather than sending it.

As YOU yourself said. They told you in CONFIDENCE. meaning you do NOT repeat it. IF you tell anyone this is only proof you cannot be trusted with things being told to you in confidence. This is not saying you can never reveal what has been told to you. As an example only if someone tells you that he/she is going to take their own life, or they know someone who is going to take their own life. You can with integrity reveal this information to the right person/authority.

No...but I'm sure you would, due to your obvious immaturity.
