The last response is not a bad one but it doesn't allow you to build your dream home. There are no real good free floor plan programs on the internet. I am a Building Constructions student and I purchase a bundle package from Wal-Mart for $50 dollars to play around with. The only problem is that you have to have an engineer or architect sign the plans. So unless you have one as a friend or family member, your going to at some point pay for one to draw up a "professionsal copy."

go steal ( or ask ) them off a floor plan you like, framer will leave then at the house during inspection stage
they've all ready figured out where the problems are, & if you can get a set of material take off's, you'll know what to buy & even what price the builder got!!!
it's all free, plus i wouldn't trust the down loads, they'll be free for a reason, built in dimension subtle problems! built'em 82 to today!

Sketch-up will let you draw and model your dream home/garden/street/city and has thousands of items you can plug in to get an idea - the end result is something you can show an architect as a starting point.
