Just substitute the values in the expression
(x-y)^2 = (5-(-1))^2 = (5+1)^2 = 6^2 = 36

well, you need to substitute the given..
(x - y)2
so x = 5, y = -1....
(5 - (-1))2
(5+1)2 = 12
but if you mean by 2 in (x-y)2, is an exponent, so the answer is 6^2 = 36...
