Although the myth (yes, myth--there is no historical evidence for the isle of Avalon) varies in form depending upon the author, Avalon is generally associated with Glastonbury, England. If you are interested in the subject and myth (not the present-day obsession with King Arthur skewed into fantasy) might I suggest the following authors and/or works:

The poet Aneirin (ca. AD 535-600)
"Historia Britonum" by a Welsh monk called Nennius
"Historia Regum Britanniae" by Geoffrey of Monmouth
"Le Mort d'Arthur" by Thomas Malory
